To Become an Islander

Stars. They shine brightly as I make my wait across a long eerie road during some late summer evening. I walk beneath a sky so bright, such light should be Forbidden in this place. Little do I know how I got there on that mysterious evening, or where I was going. Perhaps it was home? Perhaps it was to you? Exactly where, I shall never know – for it is all just a fleeting, misty memory now.

Now I’ve known for eras what I had signed up for. I saw in some strange future, a self much similar to I standing out beneath violently brightly lit towers on some frigid and dark winter eve. With few places to go. With even fewer to turn to, when the rest ran out of answers, patience, and hope. It was truly then where it was all birthed, and the few years that led up to that very moment were mere preparation for something much more sinister.

I have escaped Fate, but only by mere luck. I know that very soon, it will be mine for the taking, and it I, but until then I am left to dream only of the gold that lies at the bottom of some cold and lonely river. I dream of the cold and it’s grasping embrace as it swallows up all that I am. It does not leave me, it does not abandon me. For instead, it erases the warmth that exists from around me, from within me, and instead of fleeting – it becomes part of me. An unconditional love that cannot be broken. It is that I once dreamed of to, but alas – such periods of deeper sleeps and sharpened dreams are long gone – for now visions of flames and embers dance across my tired mine, flickering past my tired eyes. I know that soon, the house that once housed fire, will soon house it again – for one last time. For when the flames die, we will both meet our ends, for once the embers become flames – we will be judged.
